What is a nonogram?
The nonogram is a logic puzzle that takes the form of a grid, for which each cell must be filled or left blank, depending on the numbers that describe the contents of the grid. For each row and each column, there is an ordered list of numbers corresponding to the number of consecutively filled cells. For example, consider the following (resolved) nonogram:
Example 1
The numbers in the second row, 2 and 1, mean that there are two successively filled cells, followed by one filled cell. The first column number, 3, means that three columns are filled in a row in that column. There can be blank cells before the first number and after the last number, and there is always at least one blank cell between two numbers.
This puzzle became popular in the 1990s with a video game featuring a mustachioed Italian plumber on a handheld console. For more information, you can refer to the articles on nonograms, which include, among others, solution methods.
